With an average direct flying time of only 2 hours from most major UK gateways to popular Austrian destinations, flights to Austria are probably the quickest, most accessible, and most affordable travel option.

Airline Tip: British Airways

British Airways have been flying to Austria as far back as 1980 and now fly about 30,000 customers there and back every year. They offer routes from London Heathrow to Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck.

There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a flight to Austria. Our national carrier, Austrian Airlines, offers direct flights to Vienna from Chicago, Los Angeles, New York/JFK, Newark, Washington, D.C., and Boston (starting 1 July 2024).

For flying into Vienna, one-stop offers are available from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth with THAI Airways InternationalEmirates, and Qatar Airways. Codesharing with THAI Airways International, Austria's national carrier Austrian Airlines connects via Bangkok to Australia. 

If you plan to visit the western regions of Austria, such as Tirol, Salzburg, and Vorarlberg, Zurich, or Munich are your arrival airports. Flight times are almost identical to those for flying into Vienna, and you can choose additional carriers: EtihadLufthansaSingapore Airlines, and Swiss. ÖBB, the Austrian National Railways, offer direct train connections from Munich and Zurich to any major city in Austria.

Airline Tip: Air India

Air India is India's premier flight carrier and one of India's most extensive flight service providers. Since 2016 India's national flight carrier has been operating non-stop services between Vienna and New Delhi. Customers have been able to enjoy the state-of-the-art "Dreamliner" Boeing 787 aircraft, which provides world-class facilities to passengers, with 18 seats in Business Class and 238 seats in Economy Class.

In the departure halls of Terminals 1 and 3, as well as in the arrival hall of Terminal 3, there are information desks for the airport. The telephone flight information service is available 24 hours a day at the following number: +43-1-7007-0.

From the Airport to the City

Whether by train, taxi, or bus – there are various ways to get to the city.

Public Transport

The City Airport Train (CAT) connects Vienna Airport with the city centre (Wien Mitte station) in just 16 minutes.

For flights with certain airlines, there are check-in counters at the City Air Terminal Wien-Mitte station. Additionally, there are machines for baggage check-in and hand luggage. Passengers can check in their luggage up to 75 minutes before departure time or already the evening before their flight and will also receive their boarding pass.

The Vienna Airport Lines operate buses between Vienna-Schwechat Airport and important transport hubs.

The rapid transit train (S-Bahn) is an economical way to commute between Vienna city and Vienna Airport. The travel time is approximately 25 minutes from Wien Mitte; the interval is about every 30 minutes.

Every two hours, ICE trains run from Vienna Airport via Wien Hauptbahnhof and Wien Meidling directly to St. Pölten and Linz.

Taxi and Car Hire

Airport taxis are special taxis reserved solely for trips to and from the airport. They must be booked in advance and charge a fixed price (including luggage) without any extra charge for the empty trip.

For trips from Vienna to the airport (please request an "airport taxi" when booking), an additional fee for the return trip of the empty taxi is added to the fare.

Western Austria

If you plan to visit the western regions of Austria, such as Tirol, Salzburg, and Vorarlberg, flying into Zurich (Switzerland) or Munich (Germany) are great alternatives, with flights offered by Lufthansa and Swiss among others. ÖBB Austrian Railways offers train connections from Munich and Zurich to all major cities in Austria.

Eastern Austria

While Vienna Airport is the main flight hub for Eastern Austria, many airlines also fly into Bratislava Airport in Slovakia, which is only 50 km / 30 mi from Vienna.

Southern Austria

You can easily reach Austria's south by travelling to Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia.

Important information for passengers at a glance

Hand luggage / Carry-on

The EU security regulations for hand baggage apply to all departing and onward flights from EU airports as well as from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

Identity check of passengers during boarding

Due to an EU regulation, passengers must have their boarding pass and a photo ID ready at the departure gate in the interests of a high level of security. The check ensures that the boarding pass is actually being used by the person who presented the ticket at check-in. In addition, it is checked whether the travel documents presented comply with the entry regulations of the respective destination to avoid any inconvenience for the traveller at the destination.

Proof of Identity

Flights (international, Schengen and non-Schengen area) must be accompanied by a valid travel document (passport or identity card). A driving licence is not a travel document.

Children's passport

Every child needs their own child passport. An entry in the parent's passport is no longer valid.
